Sally Ride, physicist, astronaut, educator, and the first American woman in space, has died of pancreatic cancer. Much will be written about Ride and her legacy in the coming days, but I want to make a small tribute to her here at Speaking Up.
On June 18, 1983, just 18 days after I was born, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. Because of Sally Ride, I’ve never known a time when a woman couldn’t be an astronaut. She spoke up for little girls like me, and spoke to us, and her message was loud and clear.
